If you’re anything like me, summer means more time with the grandchildren - and that’s both a joy and a bit of a puzzle! Toddlers are bundles of energy, and keeping up with them (without totally wearing ourselves out) takes a bit of creativity.
Over the past few summers with my grandkids, I’ve discovered a few go-to activities that are simple, fun, and always a hit. No big expenses or fancy materials needed - just a bit of sunshine, a sense of humour, and a willingness to get a little messy now and then.
Here are some activities that have worked amazingly well for me and might help you too...
Water Play in the Garden - A Toddler's Favourite
This one’s a classic for a reason, and it can be very simple. Simply fill up a plastic tub or small paddling pool, toss in some plastic cups and spoons, and let them go wild. One afternoon, my granddaughter “washed” every toy in the house outside in a bucket. She was soaked, happy, and ready for a nap by the end of it. Win-win!
Of course, safety first so always keep close by when water’s involved and have a towel at the ready if they try to go running straight into the house!

Nature Hunts
We’ve turned walks into little adventures by searching for “nature treasures.” I’ll say, “Let’s find a pinecone, a feather, and something red,” and off we go. My granddaughter once proudly brought me a dandelion and declared, “Look, sunshine on a stick!”
It’s a sweet way to explore and notice the little things whilst they get some fresh air and are out the house (so they can't make a mess at home!).
Toddler Gardening
Now, my garden isn’t anything to brag about, but the kids love helping. They water the flowers (and my shoes), dig little holes, and even plant a few seeds. Every summer, we grow strawberries together - tiny ones, but they were so proud. Dirt under the fingernails? Soil thrown on the patio sometimes. Worth it.
Bubbles. Always Bubbles.
I don’t know what it is about bubbles, but they’re magic. Whether I’m blowing them or they’re trying (usually with more spit than success), we all end up laughing. I keep a stash of bubble wands by the back door now and it’s our go-to when nothing else works. Plus, it's a great way to get their attention if you plan to get any photos of them enjoying themselves to share with their parents.
Chalk Drawing Fun
You’d be surprised how long a toddler can be entertained and have fun with a box of chunky chalk. We’ve drawn roads for toy cars, hundreds of rainbows, made hopscotch squares, and even outlined each other like crime scenes. It washes away with the rain or a quick hose down so there is no long-lasting marks anywhere.
Books & Picnics
On quieter days, we take a blanket outside with some fruit and a stack of the grandchildren's favourite books. It slows things down a bit and gives us a chance to cuddle and read together. Some of the best chats I’ve had with my grandkids have started with, “Why is the caterpillar so hungry?”
DIY Home Obstacle Course for Toddlers
We once turned the living room into an obstacle course using sofa cushions, stools, and a tunnel made from a cardboard box. They were crawling under chairs and jumping over stuffed animals like Olympic champions. It was chaos, but the good kind.
Kitchen Dance Parties
Sometimes, we just need to move, and this is my granddaughter's favourite thing to do! We have a disco ball in our kitchen which changes colours, so I put on a playlist of silly songs and we dance like no one’s watching (because thankfully, no one is). They love waving scarves around, spinning and banging on a wooden spoon like a drum. Five minutes of that, and they’re ready for a sit-down (as am I!).
Hide the Toy Game
Instead of hiding themselves (which can be tricky indoors), I hide one of their favourite toys and guide them with “hot” and “cold” clues. They get so excited when they finally spot it. The look on their faces is worth playing again (and again).
Make-Your-Own Lollies
On warmer days, we make fruit lollies together. We blend up some berries with yogurt or juice, pour into molds (or paper cups), and freeze. Half the fun is checking every half hour to see if they’re “ready yet”, plus it teaches a little bit of patience.
Just Enjoy Being a Grandparent
Honestly, sometimes the best moments are the quiet ones - watching the clouds, relaxing on the sofa with an episode of Bluey on, or letting them “help” you fold laundry. They don’t need constant entertainment; they just need you.
So whether you’re looking after your grandkids for a weekend, a week, or the whole summer, I hope a few of these ideas help make it a bit easier - and a lot more fun. You don’t have to do it perfectly. You just have to show up, laugh along, and maybe keep the wet wipes ready for the messes.
Wishing you a summer full of sunshine and sticky ice lolly kisses
Eileen x
